I try to do all this on a Sunday, because I don't want any distractions or interruptions. Then I measure at least 3 times and compare to the plan. I leave just enough threads above the nut to accommodate a thicker base plate if that's what they use, but not so much as to look off, about 5/8" of exposed threads above the nut. I use 1/2" because it is typically the thickness of the steel base plates. I never trust the plywood alone, I want the anchor bolts supported from below to the point the plywood could be stepped on during the pour. Sometimes I have to bend up a piece of #3 to support the anchor bolts from within the slab. I then tie the anchor bolts to the rebar. I nail/screw those to the top of the form work with the anchor bolts already installed through the holes. I make templates out of 1/2" plywood drilled to the bolt hole pattern. I NEVER trust the concrete contractor to place the anchor bolts.Īfter the form work is set, beams dug, etc.
